Derevka’s Meme

Since Ava did here Healing MEME survey last week, I figured I would do mine today as a clean and fun way to kick of the reopening of the blog.

What is the name, class, and spec of your primary healer?
Derevka, Priest, Holy Primarily, Disc Secondary

What is your primary group healing environment?
25 Man Hard Mode

What is your favorite healing spell for your class and why?
Prayer of Mending – mainly because its exceptionally unique, no other class has anything like it. And with the set bonus from T9 seeing 10-12k crits “bounce” around is crazy nice!

What healing spell do you use least for your class and why?
Greater Heal – what used to be the stable downranked/spammed tank healing spell in TBC, it is now the redheaded stepchild, even for Disc Priests. This is really due to the fact that Holy Priests are really surge AOE healers now, not tank healers, and Disc Priests have Penance – couple that with Disc’s improvements to Flash heal, GHeal isn’t the best option to toss out.

What do you feel is the biggest strength of your healing class and why?
Priests are incredibly flexible with the ability to raid heal as well as provide a pivotal role in tank healing and mitigation as Disc. As a holy priest we have the ability to do very bursty HPS if you utilize a serendipitous PoH, chained with COH, and Surge of Light procs.

What do you feel is the biggest weakness of your healing class and why?
A holy, our ability to do sustained tank healing is inferior to that of a Holy Pally or Disc Priest, and as Disc our ability to raid heal is markedly limited since we lack COH.

In a 25 man raiding environment, what do you feel, in general, is the best healing assignment for you?
Raid healing with off healing assignments(Handy for SOL procs) (ie. Felfire, or Snobold damage)

What healing class do you enjoy healing with most and why?
On 10 mans I typically enjoy being paired with a Holy Pally, since they tank take care of thetank, while I keep the raid alive and assist on the tank with SOL procs. For heroic 25, I like being on the raid with a Druid, since I act as the stabilizer with burst HPS and the druid finishes the job with sustained HOTs.

What healing class do you enjoy healing with least and why?
I’d have to say Resto Shaman, but only because I don’t understand their strengths as much as I could. We typically have our Resto Shaman stick to tank healing and assisting on the raid as needed.

What is your worst habit as a healer?
Well aside from ‘healer vision’ and getting lost in the game of Whack-a-Mole, I sometimes forget to use certain cooldowns even if I don’t need it. (ie. Pop Hymn of Hope when dps might need the extra mana and I’m fine, or put up GS just for the Healing Throughput bonus since I’m glyphed.) I also often forget to use my ‘on use’ Talisman of Resurgence as Holy. As Disc I have it macro’d to Penance, as Holy I try to use it when I need extra ‘surge’ AOE healing – but I forget… a lot.

What is your biggest pet peeve in a group environment while healing?
The ‘blame the healers’ mantra. I’m fine with taking the blame if in fact it is a healer problem but if a tank ‘forgot’ to jump on Hodir and was takign 35k ticks of the cold debuff, or if a DPS stands in a fire just long enough to ‘finish their cast’…. /grumble /roar

Do you feel that your class/spec is well balanced with other healers for PvE healing?
Of course, I absolutely love healing with my healing team.

What tools do you use to evaluate your own performance as a healer?
The death test. If people died, then take a look Recount and look at their damage intake and break down what actually happened. WoL is great, but nothing beats recount for on the fly analysis. WoL is fantastic for a bigger breakdown post raid, figuring out what people were doing when the tank died. Were they healing someone else the moment the tank dropped, was it their assignment?

What do you think is the biggest misconception people have about your healing class?
Priest healing is ‘easy’. One of the toughest things about being a Holy Priest is knowing when to use what spells. In any given raid I cast COH, POH, Flash Heal, POM, Renew, and even Holy Nova. Priests aren’t the same as, say, a pally or a druid. You need to know and learn when and how to use each of your spells.

What do you feel is the most difficult thing for new healers of your class to learn?
As I just alluded: Knowing when to use what spells. Order of cast can drastically affect your efficiency. For example, if your raid keeps melee in one (or two) groups and melee takes a hit (ie. Gormok) you should be ready with a 3 x Serendipity –> POH, followed by COH to top of the stragglers.(and likely a SOL proc to hit anyone who might still need that little extra) Not visa versa. Doing so, your COH will likely hit both groups, and split the healing, while a POH chained with an instant COH typically deals with both groups quite nicely.

If someone were to try to evaluate your performance as a healer via recount, what sort of patterns would they see (i.e. lots of overhealing, low healing output, etc)?
Typically I would say they see high effective healing output with a good split between COH, POM, and POH as my top 3, followed shortly behind with Flash Heal.

Haste or Crit and why?
Tough one. I tend to prefer a balance. As holy I tend to aim for around 35% raidbuffed crit, and whatever haste I can get after that. WHY? With that much crit, I next to always get a SOL proc from a COH, POH, or the bouncing POMs, which allows me to burn it as needed. The haste after that is mainly for POH and the Flash Heal top offs.

What healing class do you feel you understand least?
Resto shaman. If I were to suddenly have to heal as one, I probably would still be in the CH spam mantra.

What add-ons or macros do you use, if any, to aid you in healing?
Grid and Clique. Grid provides plenty of information that is important to a healer. (Aggro, debuffs people have) Clique, when combined with a multiple buttoned mouse is incredibly powerful, which allows you to save a couple of fractions of a second to cast the best spell for that situation.

Do you strive primarily for balance between your healing stats, or do you stack some much higher than others, and why?
Well, as I stated before about the Haste/Crit debate – those two tend to be fairly balanced in my eyes. If I see one start to dip too low and the other two high, I might consider swapping out some items. However, I never gem for either haste or crit, and since my Mana Pool is more than enough for what I need currently, everything else is purely for Spellpower. All my yellow slots are SP/Int, Blues are SP/Spirit, and reds are pure SP.

  1. If you always forget to pop your trinket you should probably put it in a healing macro with a common used healing spell or a spell that benefits much from the proc effect.

While you won't pop it when its most needed, I still feel its better to have a good "up-time" on it.

  2. Thomas, thanks. I do for disc (I posted I have it tied to Penance) for holy I've been toying with tying it to POM and renew. I however typically kick myself for not havin it when I "want it". Hopefully I'll be rid of the talisman soon– I want my Heroic Solace!!!

  3. You mean "MY" Solace, right ? *evil grin*
