For 5 man focus, that’s most certainly another option as well, once some gear is acquired, or even a pure renew spec for a raiding HoT role As I said, there’s a million ways to spec and gear, this is just a starting point for the priest that just hit 80, probably standing around in BoA gear and leveling blues. Maybe I’ll continue this in a few weeks and explore more specs such as those…no promises though, I’m pretty lazy

I probably should have also mentioned trying to get in a Pug GDKP run for some good gear, but not everyone has the gold for that, or servers that do it on a regular basis.

Nice post and up to date, but, considering how easy is now days to get a decent gear in a fairly short time, the fresh priests will have a nice amount of spell power so renew can be used on a regular basis.
I would take glyph of renew instead of prayer of healing and guardian spirit as the last one for holy, but that’s just my point.

IMO SP/Int is the best throughput you can get. CAVEAT: PROVIDED you have the Crit & Haste levels you want. For example, right now I am gemming haste because I have a crapton of crit and mana is a non-issue, and I need to level it out

I have a confession – I have no idea what my gearscore is, on ANY of my toons. While I don’t pug much on my priest, on the occasion an alt is asked, I resist the urge to say “Sorry, I like to think I’m slightly more intelligent than a bag of rocks, so I choose my gearbased on what is best for me, not its ilevel’, and instead, I simply make up a number over 5K. I have yet to be questioned or called out.

Yup! Let’s face it – we could all write a book with 100+ spec for every situation, scenario, gear level etc, but all it would do is cause information overload & leave a poor new priest more confused than when they came here. My goal was to simply offer a starting point, and let them develop from there.

Keep in mind the values we give are “raid buffed”. I think even as disc, I sit around 29% unbuffed in my “standard” set. You want to drive your gear for crit until then as holy – some of the options I mentioned, like the Royal Moonshroud stuff is perfect. Derevka and I have different opinions on gemming for Crit & Haste, but you should never gem for pure crit, especially just starting out. It will come with the gear. Supplement yellow sockets with spellpower/crit gems if you feel you are at a proper intellect level.

I’m wondering if you have to gear for crit to be at/around 30% or is it better to gem it. I know as holy priests we still get some benefit from Spirit but should we be prioritizing gear with spirit over gear with crit if we’re not at that 30%? It seems even with mostly badge gear my priest is only sitting at around 15% non raid buffed.

Comprehensive post! Great work. I think the promotion of the GHeal spec (with FHeal glyph!) was a good suggestion. The renew/raid heavy spec works, but requires some SP to scale with. For a starting priests, the GHeal spec which requires less SP to work is probably the best one

This was great. My priest is going to hit 80 tomorrow and my biggest fear is getting groups, when all i hear now is, “what is da gear scorez”
