A Beta Build With 20% More Priest Love!

We finally saw a beta build that had some good news for the Holy Priests out there! The Beta Realms had Build 12759 drop late last night; we have lots of exciting abilities. MMO-Champion and Wowhead haven’t had a chance to update their talent builds yet; but I am sure they will shortly! Disc hasn’t had a major pass yet (so stay tuned), but holy got two pretty exciting previews.

The first change I noticed was the change  to the Holy Tree Specialization Spell. No longer is it Desperate Prayer (which has since been placed back in the Talent Tree for 1 point), they currently have a spell that is Not Yet Implemented (NYI) called “Sanctuary”.

What’s this?!?! Is this the spell that Holy Paladins have always wanted their Consecrate to be? I think it is! Is that a 90% AOE Aggro drop? Yes, yes it is! Huzzah!!!!!

Breaks squeel!

Hold one one second there, cowboy… it is not yet implemented, so there is no way to test it (or see if it has a pimpin’ animation!). one top of that, overnight Ghostcrawler had this to say: “We don’t have a new level 10 Holy ability in this build (it’s not Sanctuary) “. (source)  (it has been hotfixed/removed from spellbooks, but still is shown on the Talent Tree window.)

Now, does that mean we’ll never see Sanctuary? No… however, it might be in a different form. Personally, I now see this as a great reason to cast Life Grip. I can pull a high aggro target to your Sanctuary to save them from pulling aggro and wiping the raid. That being said, in it’s current form it is VERY powerful from a Threat Management perspective; however, the range is a bit large– as you’d need to be far from a tank to make this not exceptionally dangerous. If we see this in a build again, I would imagine a reduced range/radius will be implemented.

It is no secret, I have been one of the loudest opponents to the previous incarnation of Chakra. You can see that in my previous post here and in the many Priest/Healer Forums I visit. This new version of Chakra is pretty solid! It now is a self cast buff that is consumed by either Heal, Renew, Prayer of Healing, or Smite– what spell you consume it with determines the Chakra state you enter! On a very generous (and I bet will change) 1 Minute Cooldown! This solution answers the concern that many priests had regarding the “Spam Factor” that the fact that the old incarnation of Chakra forced you to cast 3 of the same spell in a row prior to entering Chakra and was counter-intuitive to Blizzards new mantra of “no spamming”.

More importantly, they’ve added a new talent called State of Mind which allows you to extend your Chakra state by an additional 4 seconds when you cast the spell that is associated with your Chakra. This answers one of the other concerns with the old Chakra, which was the fact that it limited your ability to weave other spells into your rotation should you need to extend Chakra’s duration. With State of Mind, you can cast other spells and then extend your Chakra state using State of Mind.

Here is a video of the new version of Chakra, its animation as well as how State of Mind works. (Click here for the Full HD version)

In addition to these changes, Inspiration is now a 2 point talent as well as Improved Healing. This does remove some of the bloat out of the top tiers of the tree… something that really was needed.

All in all, I am really excited about the changes to the Holy Tree this pass-through. There are still a few things that need work (ahem, Lolwell)– and Disc is due for its look. If Blue can implement Sanctuary without it being as overpowered as it currently sounds, it will be a great cooldown in our arsenal!

All of the information in this post is based off of Beta Build 12759 and, of course, is subject to change.

  1. Excellent video and explanation, sir. Those chakra glyphs on the ground look wicked too.

  2. This is honestly the first thing in the beta I have seen that makes me consider going holy. I totally agree with pretty much everything you said. This also makes life grip a lot more useful if the spell gets implemented. I am curious about a pass through disc. With this I am sad to see lightwell still there. And quite frankly I am not worried about lightwell being something useful, I am just worried that the idiot dps ignores it like they have since it has been in the game (except on the 40 man four horsemen)

  3. *clings to sliver of hope*

How’s the “mobs hit [x] amount harder” working as leveling Holy/Disc?

I’d love to see them make Lightwell useful, but we’ve been suggesting more useful incarnations of it for years (one of which they implemented for the NPCs in ToC), and they’ve yet to listen to us on it. I’m not terribly hopeful about it, but I’m crossing my fingers that they finally make it do something awesome.

  4. I really can see Chakra as the ‘signature look’ of Holy… while Disc is Pew Pew Lazorz and PW:B’s ‘look’.

Now Sanctuary…. I really want it, but it sounds ALMOST too good.

  5. Ok. i have to say you spec is special. I am surprised that blizzard allows priest with such little knowledge of the class in beta. these are some of the issues i know will present themselves when cata is released. i can tell from your spec the lack of knowledge of the class, but i should say the spec. You are not a holy priest, no holy priest would spec SoL 2/2.

  6. @Joe

Thanks for presuming to speak for all us Holy priests out there. Safer to say that in YOUR opinion, 2/2 SoL is not an optimum spec choice. :)

Back to the article – Sanctuary sounds awesome, but I suspect it will be tuned down a bit. Seems too powerful an ability right now.

  7. Joe I presume you mean on Live? I am aware that some Holies only go 1/2 as you often don’t need the 2nd point to proc SOL with current critical strike levels? I bounce between a spec that uses 1/2 and 2/2— fight Dependant.

Could I pull out a point and go 1/2 into SOL and top off TOF or even grab DP? Nevermind the fact that I have 2/2 for progression Heroic Hallion for tank support while on the run in the Twilight Realm– I’d rather a much greater “guarantee” that I have a SOL proc to burn on the tank during cutters….

I do appreciate you reading the blog, but you may want to check the ego at the door.

edit: And if you meant on Beta…leveling/questing w/o SoL is not the best choice in my eyes. (And I consciously chose it over DP)

  8. Thanks so much for that video – that really gives us something to look forward to.

I agree, though, that Sanctuary sounds way too good to really happen.

  9. 1) This really makes me want to play a holy priest in cata! The mechanic looks awesome.

    2) @ Joe http://elitistjerks.com/f77/t97934-wotlk_healing_compendium_v3_3_5_fun_twilight_halion/

Pluggin the formula given for circle of healing(glyphed) gives the following stats:
    1/2 SoL = 27.6% chance
    2/2 SoL = 48.6% chance
21% drop in SoL chance from CoH

Assume I consume 75% of my SoL procs: 15.75% of the healing attributable to my surged flash-heals is lost going from 2/2 to 1/2. Given a fairly conservative estimate of 20% of total healing attributable to surged flash-heals: 1 talent point accounts for 3.15% of my healing just from one source of procs. Not too shabby.

  10. Could this “Sanctuary” (I too drool at this spell) be the reason dps begin using the LoLWell? I can imagine that even a Cleave happy warrior who needs to drop threat or die might (maybe perhaps possibly) move into Sanctuaries AoE and take the time to hit that funky thing the priest was telling me about…..stranger things have happened.

  11. Wow im really glad they made the much needed passes on Priests. The Chakra glyphs on the ground are sweeeeet! Thanks for the info Derevka

  12. Thanks for keeping us updated and informed! I greatly enjoy watching and reading your articles :)

    -Vih

  13. Love it! So glad they redesigned Chakra! Although I don’t like to hit on use abilities, I’m assuming Cataclysm will allow us the time and preparation to anticipate and plan these abilities.

I would also like to hear your take on Sanctuary. I was quite jealous of Healing Rain, but with Sanctuary it looks like we have been vindicated.

  14. Awesome post, and terrific vid.. thanks for all of the new info!

  15. Very nice overview!
Regarding Sanctuary; I’m afraid it’s going to prove too good to make it live. Oh well, at least Chakra looks awesome now. :)

    1. Lightwell should be updated so standing on it for 2 seconds proccs the heal.

  16. If Sanctuary make it into the game in its current state, it will undoubtedly be overpowered, but I look forward to it, even if its potency is half of what it is now, because it makes lightwell have an acutal use.

    1) Set up Sanctuary
    2) Lay down a Lightwell
    3) DPS stands in the Sanctuary
    4) Profit!

However, a co-worker and I have already come up w/ situations that would be amazing with how it is currently stated.

    1. Set up shop w/ Sanctuary just within melee range so that the tank is not affected, and you can do amazingly quick tank swapping. In the process, lay down a Lightwell so that you can ease your own load (just pound into the melee DPS head to click it once in a while). Just think about how much more the melee DPS could go “balls to the walls” on fights like Saurfang if this were the case.

    2. Combine Sanctuary with a rogue’s new cloud ability, and you will become almost invincible in an arena setting, because everyone would have to be in melee range in order to hit you due to the cloud, but they can’t damage you because of Sanctuary. Almost makes you want to keep your RMP arena group together.

    3. Have someone that tends to die a lot, have them stand next to you in the Sanctuary, tell them to click the lightwell, and lifegrip them back over to it when they wander out.

  17. GC quoted..
“The new Holy level 10 spell is pretty simple, but it also has a lot of play with Chakra. I am just pointing this out, because many players never noticed the talent that made the old Holy level 10 (Desperate Prayer) into a tool that could heal others. ”

I believe there may have been an additional comment directly related to Sanctuary but it is clear that this spell does not play into Chakra’s skill set. So I suspect Sanctuary, as it is displayed above, is simply a placeholder for an NYI heal spell or Heal modifier. That said I would love to see Lightwell replaced by this “Sanctuary” spell……….now that makes sense imho.

  18. Found the other GC comment………

“Desperate Prayer isn’t gone. It’s just back in the talent tree. We don’t have a new level 10 Holy ability in this build (it’s not Sanctuary).” – Ghostcrawler

  19. Whiskeydave

Yeah, the incoming change to our level 10 spell will be exciting to see. Hopefully it’ll be interesting!

Regarding your 2nd GC quote, I hope you didn’t hunt too hard for it as it’s in the post above already. :)
