Mists of Pandaria: Initial Impressions

First I am excited to say that my Goal of Hitting Realm First! Priest was completed! That was only one-upped by the fact that I also shared Realm First! 90 as well. My friend, guildmate and hunter, Esoth, was Realm First! 90, but delayed his final quest turn-in nearly 40 minutes while my 5 man team struggled with some of the final gather X# of items quests and were getting screwed with the RNG drops.— and we all dinged 90 and shared the Feat of Strength within 30 seconds of each other. Overall the grind to 90 was a lot of fun. I enjoyed the excitement in guild chat, mumble, and my 5 man team. We were done in 13-14 hours if I recall– not too bad.  (I didn’t look at the time when I dinged… I just celebrated, enjoyed my flying mount again, and started some of my dailies.) Congrats to the rest of my guild, we claimed Realm First! Priest, Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Warlock, and Mage — 6 of 11 classes.

I have to really stand up and applaud Blizzard for Mists of Pandaria; it really is probably one of their most polished expansions to date. Visually its really impressive, the story-line is fun to follow, the graphical improvements are nice, the mob polygons have been increased, and there is really SO MUCH to do…. this is where I have mixed emotions: There is almost too much to do.  I know a number of people have shared similar concerns with the plethora of things to do. Beru summed up some of the concerns with the dailies nicely (here).

Aside from the few of the quests having some bugs, which will hopefully be fixed with today’s maintenance, my issue with the hubs and hubs of dailies is that, as a pretty well progressed raider (We finished 52nd US in T13) I feel obligated to do all these dailies every day, since getting access to those VP items sooner than later will be critical in staying in the top. Not starting Heroic Raids “on time” puts us off pace for the whole tier. What also needs to be underscored is that these dailies not only provide access to the VP items, but the profession patterns as well. Yes, VP is throttled so it isn’t QUITE as much of a big ordeal… you can’t buy anything with 1,000 VP (Week 1′s cap)… but you can in week 2.

Farmville -

Ok I joke when I call it Farmville… but I kinda like it. Food mats are VERY expensive since many Heroic Raiders will not settle for below 300 stat level food, which requires grinding to max level cooking in your preferred stat to craft.  (For me, at least at the start of the tier,  it will be Spirit, Spirit, Spirit!) The items to cook these foods will be heavily farmed, and very expensive on the AH, so being able to grow some of them on my farm has been handy. (I just hit Revered with the Tillers today, and now have 12 plots on my Priest to till). I have gone so far as moved 4 of my alts out to Halfhill to just tend their 4 plots of soil. That is 16 additional plots a day for me to farm my extra food mats.

I am camping the rare spawn location (waiting for it to rain, since that apparently is the cue for the spawn) to hopefully get the Ancient Pandaren Fishing Charm to hopefully make getting the fish I need a bit easier.

Raiding and Gearing -

Starts tomorrow (Wednesday) for us (we raid Wed/Thurs/Sun)… so I am very excited to get to see the final changes to the raids I did lots of testing on in Beta. My priest is pretty well set for the raid tomorrow, I need to finish a few minor tweaks… and hope for a couple of dungeon drops that SIMPLY DON’T EXIST, and perhaps grab a BOE or two from the AH/BMAH.

I will probably run the first week as Holy, since that is what I had spent the most time in dungeons running… and see how the raid does with only one Disc priest. (SPIRIT. SHELL. IS. THAT. AMAZING… don’t let people tell you otherwise. It really is.)

I have my Cranes deck all set to go for the Faire this weekend and will have my Relic of Chi Ji in time for Heroic Raids, which with that much spirit should hopefully make my regen concerns a moot point.

Gearing has been fun, running dungeons with my guildies… I’ve even been doing a good deal of DPSing in my shadow spec! (Lots of overlap between my Holy and Shadow Gear). Now I doubt I’ll be doing that in many (if any raids), but it is possible— and I do like the new ‘rotation’ for shadow, it is a lot more fun than the old one from Cata.

Favorite Moment -

Aside from the Realm First! spam and whispers… probably a tie between entering a Heroic Dungeon for the first time in the x-pac and my guild assembling to take down the two world bosses. What was yours?

What have YOU been doing? What do you like? What did you not like?

  1. Grats on the realm first! I managed to snatch realm first priest myself, about 4-5 hours behind the full realm first. I kinda got lucky, because other than having done the quests in the beta, I had made no other preparation, didn’t even have potions and flasks with me. I was just trying to get to 90 as quickly as possible, but halfway through it I realized I actually had a chance at it. And yes I don’t think the thrill of it is topped by anything.

Wow having the Crane deck ready to go must have taken a whole lot of spirits of harmony, how did you pull it off?

I agree that spirit shell is indeed amazing. I kinda wish however that it lasted less and had a shorter cd.

I’ve been enjoying playing with our level 90 talents, at the moment enjoying Halo. It requires good positioning and is thus situational, but it can heal everyone for 70-80k before criting and hit everyone for around 60k, not too shabby I’d say.

Farmville’s fun. I and the other officers brought all our lvl 85s on the farm on day 2 and have been farming veggies altogether, to level my cooking. It is true that the lvl 300 food will be a big seller.

I better stop before I start rambling on.
    Grats again!

    1. Two scribes using their CDs daily. 2 Cache of the Valley containing Scrolls of Wisdom… and purchasing under-priced cards off the AH. I got my first ace of cranes for 9k… and crafted my second last night. I’ll flip it, or trade with a guildy, for profit.

      1. Hehe I guess I’m a cheapo, 9k seems a bit steep to me. Kinda wish I had second scribe now, or that I had started on the first scribe on day 1. I still have some time I suppose, we are not even close to be ready for raiding yet, only about 7 people on level 90, 3 of whom only dinged yesterday.

Out of curiosity, you didn’t opt for going for the scribe BoA staff instead?

        1. Oh darn, forgot to ask, what are these Cache of the Valley?

          1. You get a ‘bag’ with random stuff in it when completing all the Golden Lotus Dailies— its Cache of something. I’ll have to double check.

        2. No… the staff is good, but not 20 days worth of scrolls. Especially since the trinket is BIS the whole tier.

          1. Ah that bag, I think it’s called something of the vale. I haven’t found any scrolls in it, but maybe it has to be the scribe doing the dailies.

I really hate how little rep the golden lotus dailies give, and the gating for the shadowpan/august celestials dailies.

  2. I’m having a ton of fun with MoP. I love the feel. Asian theme. Separate and small continent. Linearity of the questing. We managed to do roughly one level per zone and move on. Something about changing scenery when you ding feels great. Although I’m burnt out on dungeons after the gear grind they’re probably the best set Blizzard has released. There aren’t any I dread (like Deadmines) and they manage to be engaging without being hard. As a healer I like mechanics that require moving around a bit instead of staring at grid. I think people are making way too big a fuss over dailies. Don’t do all of them everyday, simple as that.

I did the first four raid bosses last night as disc and wow the fights were great. The first two specifically are perfect for well timed spirit shell spam (overload and epicenter). As far as throughput disc will not do as well as a good monk or shaman but they definitely have their niche. Overall I was happy with my performance and the state of the spec is incredibly fun and the most engaging it’s been… well ever. My one complaint is I almost completely ignored final tier talent spells because mana was simply too tight. Casting cascade on cd is not an option right now. I’ll probably post disc PoV kill videos to howtopriest later tonight.

  3. Congratz on first Realm 90! and First Realm Priest Derevka and Adinne!

As a disc priest coming back since the summer, it all seems new and fun…and makes sense now! SS is…..the best. I am using Halo and that is very fun! as a fresh lvl 90 this wkend, I am still grinding heroics and improving my gear as best as i can until I get raid loot. For now, it’s heroics and LFR next week!
It has been a very fun expansion so far, this is the most fun I have had this whole year!
Farmville is addicting. I will be bringing my other 85s to plant for me as well, lol

Stay healthy and have fun everyone!

  4. Hey Derevka, I noticed in your armory that you are stacking spirit pretty hard. Do you really feel that spirit is better than int at this gear level even with holy only getting 50% regen from spirit? I do find myself running a bit short on mana in raids with 6.2k spirit though.

  5. forget about playing a healing priest in progressive raiding. It isn’t happening.

    1. Simply untrue. Don’t wallow in the Official Forum QQ. You can put out solid numbers along with other classes. For example, on Feng I was #2 on our 25 man with over 51k HPS.

Don’t pay attention to the logs with Broken Monks, as ZSD isn’t diminishing. It’ll be corrected before too long.

Disc is trickier as it has a higher skill cap since it works the best once you know the fight damage patterns and can prep the raid for the big hits better.

      1. 25 man and 10 man feel different at the moment healing as a priest. I raid in both raid sizes as a priest healer and 25s simply feel more balanced. In 10′s i feel like i’m being carried by my healing partner and that im bringing alot less to the raid than other healers (this opinion doesn’t come simply from looking at hps meters).

There are many many raid teams on my realm that simply wont recruit priest healers for there raid groups. I don’t think we are THIS bad, but i think something definitely needs to be looked at.

      2. Derevka You’re clearly drinking from the same punch as Blizz if you think Priest are ok. I dare say something went wrong in your raid to bump a priest up to number 2 (ie. Different assignments and or other heals died). Also, the official forum is not QQ. It’s where some of us are voicing our opinions about how bad the state of priest currently are right now. Stop in and read/comment. We could use a voice such as yours in the community.

      3. Regardless of it’s true or not if it’s perceived to be true then yes, priest will have a harder time raiding at the moment. Of course this is gonna seem biased but as I’m looking for a new guild I’m noticing that a lot (not all, but a lot) of guilds are asking for any healer but a priest.
