4.0 Survival GuideHoly & Disc Specs, Glyphs, and More

4.01 is coming! (and all signs are pointing towards Tuesday, October 12th) So that means we all need to be prepared. There has been a lot of talk here at Tales as well as many other blogs regarding Specs, Glyphs and the like. I’ve decided to do a summary of what we’ve discussed here in effort to preare us all for the release of 4.01. There are 4 key things you need to understand to be prepared: Tree Changes/Choices Glyph Changes/Choices Healing Mechanic Changes Reforging

Everyone’s a Little Bit RacistA look at the 4.0/Cata Racial Abilities

NOTE: This post has been updated and moved here for Mists of Pandaria.  http://talesofapriest.com/resources/racial-bonuses/ Well, Cataclysm is now announced! December 7, 2010– the Beta still has some work that needs to be done (quest reward itemization, profession implementation to name a couple). However, we all need to remember that there are often several internal builds that Blizz’s teams are testing that the Beta folks do not have access to yet. I am confident that we’ll ultimately be pleased with the end result. With Cata FINALLY announced we need to start planning for it’s release. Not only will we have access to 5 more levels, new dungeons, new spells and abilities, we also will have access to new races and new race combinations with the classes. I am guilty of changing my race more …

New Animations: Chakra, Sanctuary, Leap of Faith, and Archangel

The latest beta build hit last night and added a number of changes to the Priest trees as well as the polish we’ve been looking for on our spell animations! We’re getting closer and closer to a finished product I think. Early November could very well be the Cataclysm date— and Boubouile at MMO-Champion might be spot on with his prediction. (Personally, that works for me since the end of November I am on vacation!) That being said, there are a number of bugs in the latest build that will need to be addressed. Atonement, for example, specced 3/3 is not converting 120% of your smite to healing… it converts only 12%. Clearly something that needs to be fixed to allow for priests to give Disc a fair shake as …

Holy Specs in 4.0 and Cataclysm

We’re getting closer and closer! The Public PTR has now been patched with a 4.0 Build! This means we should (soon™) see the build on the Live Servers and shortly after see Cataclysm! As of yet, we’ve not seen an official Blue Post giving us an actual date. I think the next 1-2 beta patches will be the real tell tale sign. If the next patch is as big as I suspect it will be… Boubouille’s November 2nd date could very well be the date we all hope it is. By now many of you might have already downloaded and copied to the PTR to take a look at the 4.0 Talent Trees. Over the next two weeks we’ll be explaining both Discipline and Holy builds are at level 85 …

Cataclysm: Holy Throughput & A Leap of Faith Primer

I’ve been playing Holy as my primary spec since Vanilla. Holy has had a number of changes through the years going from general healers, to tank healers, to raid healers, to nearly exclusively raid healers. A lot of these roles have bene defined by the way our Tree is structured. What talents and throughput abilities you have available to you really can define what roles you can fill best. I use the term “best” because, of course, you can fill a tank healing, tank support, or raid healing role as any healer— but in my opinion “best” also weighs in what your talent’s benefit most. With Cataclysm, we’ll see a good deal of improvement to our healing flexibility via these talents.  Lets take a look at some of the current …

Cataclysm Beta – Mastery Preview & Thoughts

In The Burning Crusade we saw the introduction of Haste. Haste was an interesting concept to many classes… it meant shorter cast times, shorter GCD’s, haste caps, and new itemization values. “Well this item has 10 more spellpower, but it has 30 less haste….” Enter: World of Warcraft – Cataclysm. With this comes the Mastery stat. Mastery will, inevitably, complicate gearing choices. Couple this with the increased importance to haste (previously outlined here) and you now have a much more complicated process than it currently is for priests.

A Beta Build With 20% More Priest Love!

We finally saw a beta build that had some good news for the Holy Priests out there! The Beta Realms had Build 12759 drop late last night; we have lots of exciting abilities. MMO-Champion and Wowhead haven’t had a chance to update their talent builds yet; but I am sure they will shortly! Disc hasn’t had a major pass yet (so stay tuned), but holy got two pretty exciting previews. The first change I noticed was the change  to the Holy Tree Specialization Spell. No longer is it Desperate Prayer (which has since been placed back in the Talent Tree for 1 point), they currently have a spell that is Not Yet Implemented (NYI) called “Sanctuary”.

Cataclysm and Haste

Haste has played a fairly big role for a number of classes when it was introduced in The Burning Crusade and now in Wrath.  After some initial testing, it seems that Haste is going to be bigger and better in Cataclysm. Before you go rushing out and getting as much Haste Gear that you can in preparation for Cataclysm, let’s remember the basics about haste… Haste, like crit, requires more to scale as you level. That means, 1000 haste at level 80 isn’t the same as 1000 haste at level 81. For example, at Level 80, I have 29.4% haste (964 Haste)– the second I dinged 81 my haste dropped to 19.1%. Pretty dramatic.

The Cataclysm Beta Journey Begins!

I’ve spent a good amount of time on Beta for over the last few days since the last build, and I must say I am rather impressed at how well the game looks and runs. For those of you who have done PTR or Blizzard Beta testing in the past, you are familiar with the fact that the world servers constantly crash… that isn’t happening this go around. Point 1:  Blizzard. After logging in for the first time, I made my way to Stormwind through the handy portals in Dalaran and… OMG… you can mount anywhere in the world now! Standing in the Auction House on a Amani War Bear? Allowed. Sitting in the Inn on your Proto Drake? Allowed. It certainly was a treat to fly from the Mage …
